Digital Scale Models

MSK is currently using rapid prototyping machines to produce engineering models of structural components for studies and visualization purposes. The illustrations are of the models produced for the Corps of Engineers for the Olmsted Dam Project on the Ohio River.

Above is a digital model showing the underside of a 3,800-ton precast shell.  Full size dimensions are approximately 125' x 100'.  Below is the resulting physical model at 1:100 scale as produced by the rapid prototyping machine.

Below is a portion of a dam produced using SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) at 1:120 scale, comprising the 13 pieces that interlock together in the precast structure.  Tremie concrete fills the underside of the shells and the interior of the piers shown after installation in the Ohio river.
Below is a close-up of one of the hollow precast piers showing detail
